At what resolution do you scan prints / slides / negatives / film?

To read an article about the practical view of scanning resolutions, please see: Resolving Resolution.

Here are details about the various resolutions we use at Lexington Photo Scanning:
  1. For photo prints, we scan at 600dpi on the Kodak Picture Saver Scanning System PS80.  600dpi is needed for printing a picture at the same size as the original or using in any photo project that involves printing.

Please remember, this service is intended for social sharing, not archival storage or artistic representation which requires higher resolution and thus increased cost.  Having said that, we can scan at 1,200 dpi at a higher cost per scan.

  2. For 35mm slides, we use a SlideSnap Pro slide scanner, scanning slides at 2,800 dpi using RAW format which improves our ability to adjust exposure and white balance on slides.

  3. For negatives, we use a Wolverine Titan 8-in-1 High Resolution negative scanner which scans negatives at 4,000 dpi.

We can also use an Epson V800 flatbed scanner which can scan up to 6,400 dpi at considerably higher cost because of the time needed to scan with a flatbed scanner.

  4. All scanned images are encoded as JPEG images with a quality Q of at least 70. To see a comparison of various levels of JPEG compression please click here.
